Join us for the AU MLK Day of Service 2025!

American University letterhead

December 10, 2024

Dear AU Community:

Join us for the annual American University MLK Day of Service, where students, faculty, and staff come together to honor the life and leadership of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through celebration, reflection, and meaningful action. The day will begin with a welcome program and breakfast on campus, featuring conversations about Dr. King's enduring legacy and the importance of dialogue across differences in fostering unity and understanding. We will reflect on how his teachings guide our university’s commitment to civic engagement and deepen our connection with the broader D.C. community. Following the program, participants will engage in service projects with local organizations, putting Dr. King’s call to action into practice.

 When: Saturday, January 18, 2025 (10:00am-4:00pm)

Where: Mary Graydon Center 128

What to Bring: Comfortable clothing, a reusable water bottle, and a willingness to serve

What You'll Receive: Free breakfast and MLK Day of Service shirts

Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” Let’s answer that question together by making a difference in our community. Spaces are limited, so sign up today to secure your spot to be part of this meaningful day. If you'd like to sign up as a group or with specific people, please indicate so when you register.

Leadership Opportunities: Students looking to enhance their leadership skills and play a key role in the MLK Day of Service can volunteer as group leaders. Responsibilities include guiding volunteer groups to their service sites, connecting their group to the mission of the day, facilitating communication with nonprofit hosts, and serving as a liaison with the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement in emergencies. Leaders must attend a training session beforehand to prepare for their role, understand expectations, and learn about available resources.
