You are here: American University Finance Communications Campus Race to Zero Waste Competition, Now Through March 29

Communication February 6, 2025

Dear AU Community,

AU is participating in the Campus Race to Zero Waste, a national competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste. The competition runs now through March 29. We’re officially tipping off our efforts on Monday, February 10 at the annual Sustainability Basketball Game. Meet us at Bender Arena at 6 p.m. to cheer on the Men’s Basketball team and celebrate sustainability on campus!

We need support from our whole campus! Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Decrease your use of disposable plastics. Invest in a reusable water bottle, utensil set, and/or coffee mug for eating on-the-go.
  • Empty and clean recyclables that hold food. Keeping food waste and liquids out of the recycling bins is critical for successful recycling.

Also, in the coming weeks, keep an eye out for special events and offers to promote our zero waste efforts, including:

  • $1 off offer on house-made drinks at The Bridge now through Feb 7 when you use a reusable cup.
  • Drop off e-waste (personal and work-related) in the East Campus surface level parking lot between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 18.
  • Join the public waste audit of MGC on March 5 at 11 a.m. on the quad (rain location SIS parking garage).
  • Swap your office supplies with the Office of Sustainability and Staff Council on March 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kogod 234.
  • Join the Office of Sustainability and the Center for Environment, Community, and Equity for the Sustainability Symposium, hosted on March 27 as part of President Alger’s inauguration celebration.

Be sure to lend your support today!

Sincerely,

Megan Litke
Director of Sustainability
